Winter may seem like an invitation to skip Houston Winter Lawn Maintenance until the warm weather rolls back around, but the key to maintaining your lawn year-round is to make preparations to keep it healthy even during the winter months. Keep these tips in mind to prevent your hard work from going to waste during the winter season:
#1 Lower the mowing height of your mower.
Removing any young, tender growth on the lawn will prevent your lawn from falling victim to winter diseases. Additionally, removal of this new growth will prevent your lawn from quickly drying out when the cold first comes. Allowing this new growth to dry out will lead to a brown-colored lawn. Though it is important to gradually cut the lawn shorter, be careful not to remove all of the green leaf tissue which could damage the turf.
#2 Give your lawn a final fertilization.
Though your lawn will not absorb the nutrients immediately, it is important to give your lawn one final dose of fertilization to be stored and used throughout the winter months. These nutrients will be stored in the roots and used during the beginning of spring.
#3 Clear your lawn of debris.
Clearing your lawn of any debris like logs, toys, or gardening equipment will prevent these objects from smothering the grass they sit on. Removing these objects will prevent damage to the turf as well as decrease the lawn’s vulnerability to diseases.
#4 Aerate your lawn.
Aerate your lawn before the first freeze to prepare your lawn for fertility in the spring. Aeration will decrease the extent to which thatch can affect your lawn during the winter.
